SI15 Open call for participation

[With apologies for cross postings; please distribute!]

Dear all,

The call for Papers, Posters/demos, Abstracts, Sonic artworks, and Jukebox files for SI15 is now open! Details at http://www.soundislands.com/si15.

“SI15 ~sound:senses”, the 2nd International Symposium on Sound and Interactivity will be held Wednesday 19 to Sunday 23 August 2015, in Singapore. The events are organised with support from the School of Art Design Media (http://www.adm.ntu.edu.sg) and in partnership with ArtScience Museum (http://www.marinabaysands.com/museum.html)  and the Asian Computer Music Project (http://www.acmp.asia), with core funding from the CLASS scheme at Nanyang Technological University (http://www.ntu.edu.sg).

Information about the previous SI13 Symposium can be found here: http://soundislands.com/si13/, and the ensuing set of publications, here: http://cec.sonus.ca/econtact/16_2/

::::::::::::::::: THEME :::::::::::::::::

:::

Sound is a medium that acts as a glue between the senses. Hearing is deeply intertwined with vision and movement. Beyond this, researchers and artists are mapping out crossmodal associations with touch, smell, feel, and taste, leading to new and fascinating interaction designs, architecture, and culinary experiences, as well as a veritable coral reef of artworks. It is this interaction, “~sound:senses”, that is at the core of the symposium. (http://www.soundislands.com/si15).

::::::::::::::::: PEOPLE :::::::::::::::::

:::

Keynote speakers are interaction design specialist Stefania Serafin (http://imi.aau.dk/~sts/) and crossmodality researcher Charles Spence (http://www.psy.ox.ac.uk/team/principal-investigators/charles-spence). Keynote artists will be announced shortly.

::::::::::::::::: GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT SUBMISSIONS :::::::::::::::::

:::

All submissions will be double-blind peer reviewed by a minimum of 2 reviews per submission (except for Jukebox files, see below).

Your submission must be entirely anonymous.

Authors of accepted submissions will be invited to participate at an appropriate session.

At least one author must register at SI15 for the paper to appear in the published proceedings.

A small number of exceptional submissions can be presented remotely over Internet. Indicate your preference for this in the online form to be considered.

Authors in the Jukebox files category are not requested to register or attend.

Paper submissions (Paper, Poster/demo, Breaking news) should use this template.

Accepted and camera-ready papers will be included in the SI15 Proceedings to be published open-access in a Special Issue of ICMA Array (ed. C. Haworth).

The types of submissions solicited for SI15 include:

::::::::::::::::: PAPER :::::::::::::::::

:::

Paper submissions should be in the form of a ‘long paper’, 4-8 pages, including all figures and references. Full papers should describe work that offers a substantial contribution to the field. Authors of accepted papers will be invited to give an oral presentation of their work. Authors of selected long papers will be invited to submit an extended version (up to 12 pages) for publication in an academic journal (more information about this will be made available later).

::::::::::::::::: POSTER/DEMO :::::::::::::::::

:::

Poster and demo submissions should be in the form of a ‘short paper’, 2-4 pages, including all figures and references. Posters and demos might describe either finished work or work in a late stage of progress. Selected poster authors will be asked to bring a large-format (e.g. A1 or A2) printout version of their paper. Selected demo authors will be asked to bring the necessary material (e.g. computer, interfaces, gadgets, etc) to demonstrate their work in an engaging way. The SI15 poster/demo session will be held at ArtsScience Museum with a potentially large general audience. When weighing the decision to submit in these categories, we encourage authors to consider their work in relation to the potential positive benefits (both to authors and their audiences) afforded by the personal interactions that occur in this type of session.

::::::::::::::::: BREAKING NEWS :::::::::::::::::

:::

Breaking news submissions should be in the form of a ‘structured abstract’, 1-2 pages. Topics include, but are not limited to late-breaking results, works in early stages of progress, novel methodologies, unique or controversial theoretical positions, and discussions of unsuccessful research or null findings. Authors of accepted breaking news will be invited to give a short presentation of their work. The deadline is later in order to allow very recent contributions.

::::::::::::::::: SONIC ARTWORK :::::::::::::::::

:::

Sonic artwork submissions should be in the form of a ‘artwork writeup’, 1-2 pages. The text should clearly indicate the technical requirements to produce the artwork, and highlight a weblink to a media file (e.g. Vimeo, SoundCloud etc) that gives a good idea of the artwork. We encourage the submission of multichannel electroacoustic music, acousmatic pieces, live electronics performance, audiovisual compositions (aka visual music), and sound installations. Submissions in this category will be reviewed by an international panel of experts. Preference will be given to submissions that are technically feasible and have a clear documentation of the setup. At least one of the authors who wish to have their work presented at SI15 must register.

::::::::::::::::: JUKEBOX ::::::::::::::::

:::

Jukebox files should be submitted as a zip archive. Carefully read the instructions at http://www.soundislands.com/si15/jukebox. The “SI15 Jukebox - When We Collide” is a sound installation that automatically selects and plays back soundfiles. It will be presented physically at ArtScience Museum and streamed online during the SI15 events. Authors submitting in this category are not requested to register or attend.

::::::::::::::::: OTHER ::::::::::::::::

:::

If you are keen on participating but your work takes a form that is outside of the above categories, please submit a ‘short description’, 1-3 pages. Your idea might be to present a street performance artwork, a soundwalk, organise a workshop, or something entirely different. Interesting proposals will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

…and last but not least:

::::::::::::::::: STUDENT AWARD ::::::::::::::::

:::

If you are currently a full-time student, you are eligible for the SI15 Best Student Submission Award. Be sure to indicate this in the online form if you qualify!
